My love of #Gloves ( Past Master The Worshipful Company of Glovers of London) led me to Edinburgh National Galleries of Scotland to see the exhibition The World of King James VI & I. Marking 400 years since his death there is much to learn about this King who joined the kingdoms and reigned in style. He loved jewels and gloves. The exhibition included a pair of hunting gloves/gauntlets owned by the King and used for hunting. Dyed deep red doeskin with rich silk embroidery, spangles and fringe incorporating gold metal thread, they are in very good repair. The gloves are on loan from the Glovers' Glove Collection Trust. See the weblink to the whole Collection. It was a delight then to visit another exhibition on the same day showing Andy Goldsworthy/Fifty Years. This artist known for his outdoor work and use of natural materials paid due reference to the important working #gloves that he uses to deal with stones, reeds, snow, ice and some barbed wire in his amazing work in often hostile and brutal settings. https://lnkd.in/e5X-zHR4

Every month City of London Corporation provide a newsletter update of the work that they are doing towards #ClimateAction. This month hear about the detailed work to make King William Street more accessible and looking forward to trees coming in the near future. Also great news that the City Corporation is ranked in the top three local authorities for #climateleadership. The strongest score came in planning and land use. But more to do in all categories. As manager of 11,000 acres of open spaces around London the threat of wildfires is real especially at Wanstead Flats. Colleagues have been working hard with local groups and London Fire Brigade to communicate the steps needed to stop fire spread in these hot weather conditions. Thanks to Chair of Epping Forest Committee Caroline Haines. 15 of the sites run by the City have been awarded Green Flag Status due to good stewardship and care. Lots more to read here or subscribe for your own monthly update. https://lnkd.in/e5N6f_VT

London has so much to offer. Society of Antiquaries of London are holding a special exhibition to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the #MagnaCarta. Yes, I know it was sealed in 1215 but it was 10 years' later that a revised version was re-issued by the young Henry III and became effective. Alongside this famous document of international fame and legal importance is the anniversary of the #CharteroftheForest. Less well known, it was necessary to curb the improper seizure of power and property by the King and other nobles to the detriment of the common man. The Charter of the Forest first sealed in 1217 granted common people greater rights of access to the forest to use for pasture, foraging and firewood. Applying this to #EppingForest – managed by City of London Corporation – the Charter restored the legitimacy of the forests and was part of UK legislation until 1971. It has left an extraordinary legacy of ancient trees and landscapes, such as this one at Long Pond, captured by artist #DanLlewelynHall and on display at the Society. Until 19th September you can view these at the Society of Antiquaries OR you can visit Epping Forest and enjoy the trees, many of which were around at the time that the Forest Charter was implemented. Thanks to sponsors including #ArtsScholarsLivery Photo of main tree copyright Marion Sidebottom. Photo of Magna Carta from Guildhall Collection.

What will 2040 be like? Can you reimagine the world with a thriving #CircularEconomy? I am more and more impressed with efforts to make the circular economy real. City of London Corporation are partners in the #Romulus project run by maconda to ensure construction projects audit and then passport usable items from retrofit and demolition sites; for individuals #GiveandTakeDays allow tech items to be repurposed with endless clothes, books and household goods recycled and with a #LibraryofThings planned; at a policy level the City is working with Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs on circular economy matters. So don't miss this seminar on 4 September in person at 5pm to add in your ideas. https://lnkd.in/eZP96nUs

400-year-old royal gloves and modern art collide. 🧤👑 My journey from a king's hunting gauntlets to Andy Goldsworthy's working gloves.
